Movie production positions

Movie production positionsMovie production positionsPost production is everything that happens to a film once shooting ends and the cast and crew go home. It involves the editors who work with sophisticated computer technology to put together hundreds of hours of raw footage into a cohesive and exciting story, it is the musicians who compose the score, it the sound effects editors and folly artists who add image-enhancing sounds when the original noise was not sufficient and it is countless other assistants and project managers who make up the latter half of a films credits. These technical positions are often unionized and require several years of apprenticeship before accreditation. Upon being formally inducted into a union, a person is eligible for union wages. Procuring jobs is often based on who one knows directors often select teams for their films who they worked with in the past. Those relationships end up being extremely valuable since people often work with the same individuals again and again. Many post-production artists are film school graduates that either specialized in coursework related to one particular area, or are people who were brought into apprenticeship programs through friends. CrewThe crew of any production is the behind-the-scenes individuals who work on the tischset of a movie, film, TV show, or video production. This is separate from the cast, the actors or performers in front of the camera. There are often intriguing titles in a films credits (e.g. boom operator, best boy, grips, etc.). They also include the usual expected characters-the costume designers, the makeup artists, the hairdressers and so on. The most important members of a crew (aside from the director of course) is the cinematographer, a.k.a. the director of photography (more commonly known as the D.P.). This is the individual that creates the visual texture of the film and makes each scene aesthetically appealing. Boom operators, grips, and best boys are often the muscles behind a production generally men who work with the technical details of sound, projection, lighting and other aspects of production. There are a few other key roles one is the Assistant Director and the Unit Production Manager. The A.D. works with the director, and often has the opportunity to direct secondary footage (establishing scenes, the introductory credits, transition scenes, etc.) The Unit Production Manager manages the logistics of making everything happen for the director ensuring that the location is suited for shooting, that all permits have been met, that everyone working on the set is doing so within union guidelines, managing payroll and the shooting schedule, ensuring that catering and ancillary benefits for the cast and crew are accommodated, and making sure that all the requisite production necessities are on hand (i.e. trailers for stars, headphones and walkie-talkies, etc.) The lowest level of entry onto the set of a production i s as a production assistant. Any given production will have about a half-dozen PAs, some paid, others not. Many of them will be friends of crew members who simply want credits on their entertainment resumes. PAs are the production parallel of creative assistants. They do everything from deliver scripts to relevant parties, fetch coffee, and do any other menial tasks that need to be done. As in post-production positions, most crew members are unionized. For those fortunate enough to be in the loop, it can be a glamorous job that enables a person to travel to exotic locations for film shoots, enjoy several months of vacation a year in between projects, and to earn a healthy salary in the process. The downside, of course, is that projects are uncertain and the hours are very long while working (film shoots are known for being pressured sessions of 14 hour days for 30 days straight). There are some unique programs to enter the field, such as the Assistant Director Training Progr am which is sponsored by the Directors Guild of America. About two dozen individuals with some experience in the entertainment industry and with goals of eventually being Unit Production Managers (the title of the program is a bit of a misnomer-the application clearly states that it is NOT for aspiring directors), are given the opportunity to work for a year on major productions.

7 Steps to Consider Before You Start Consulting

7 Steps to Consider Before You Start Consulting7 Steps to Consider Before You Start ConsultingConsulting work can be a lifeline when youre unemployed it can also derail your job search and extend your unemployment.Any out-of-work executive is likely to hear the siren song of consulting. You can lend your years of expertise to a business part time and temporarily. It can be a paycheck when you really need it, a foot in the door and a way to stay busy.On the downside, it can also be a distraction from the job search and ultimately extend your unemployment.Cheri Paulson, senior vice president of Keystone Associates, a Boston career management and transition firm, recommended clients who have just lost their jobs wait before they accept any consulting work. Give your job search some time, she said. You cant land a job if your search is piecemeal. Once your search is proceeding well - when your resume is complete and you are regularly meeting with people and you know where to search for jobs - you can consider consulting. She offers her clients the following checklist of seven items to use when considering whether or not to take a consulting job? Does it still give me time to be flexible in my job search?? Would I learn anything new that I can use to showcase my skills and experience?? Does the firm have cachet in the marketplace? Would it give me brand recognition by affiliating with the project?? Am I going to be around great people with whom to network?? Is it geographically reasonable? If it requires you to be on the road more than a few days every week, your job search will falter.? Is the compensation worth your time?? Can you protect your client list? Be sure that you are not being asked to give away your clients. Those clients are something you may need to get you to your next job, Paulson said.If you do take a consulting role, you should still be in job-search mode, Paulson said. Your goal should be to get in front of three to five people a week. Determine how many meetings, how many phone calls and how many events you will need to go to for the consulting position. Can you do some of that work during the day so you can fulfill your job-search goals? People like to feel needed and have a purpose, and they feel good when they are doing a project. But dont get so absorbed that you stop your search.

Autonomous Vehicle Industry Races to Fill Big Engineering Tale...

Autonomous Vehicle Industry Races to Fill Big Engineering Tale... Autonomous Vehicle Industry Races to Fill Big Engineering Tale... Autonomous Vehicle Industry Races to Fill Big Engineering Talent GapTransportation in the next 10 years will change dramatically, shifting from automobile ownership to a much greater use of shared mobility options. Many of those rides will be electric and automated.Once automated or self-driving vehicles (AVs) become commonplace, theyll turn the entire transportation system on its head, said Tim Papandreou, founder of City Innovate, a San Francisco-based company that uses data to guide city governments on technologies. City designs, trucking and shipping, and mobility management are just a few things that local governments will face during a major transformation. The engineering job market is another area that local governments will need to tackle. Today, the AV industry is in dire need of engineers capable of designing and working on these types of vehic les, and the systems and infrastructure needed to support them.Google tests one of its self-driving vehicles. Image WaymoTheres a tremendous talent eu-agrarpolitik for AV engineers, says David Silver, head of the School of Autonomous Systems at Udacity, a higher-education start-up of Mountain View, Calif.Silver isnt alone. Sebastian Thrun founded Googles self-driving car gruppe in 2007 and has seen a large number of AV-related start-ups sprout since then. But engineering programs that train the engineers to create and work on AVs havent, and are almost nonexistent, he says. For You System Helps Self-driving Cars See in Fog AV companies are desperate for talent, he says. But the skill set needed to build self-driving vehicles, and the infrastructure needed to support them requires multidisciplinary skills that most engineering students lack, he says.Thrun estimated that the overall U.S. tech industry needs about 5,000 engineers. That demand is why AV engineers salaries average $240,00 0 annually compared to an average of $110,000 for software engineers, he said.Just that difference in compensation shows how hard it is for AV companies to find good engineers, Silver said.Thrun co-founded Udacity, an online school that offers mini-courses and certificates within a number of engineering and computer subjects, about seven years ago. The school established its AV engineering course two years ago. Since then, about 12,000 students have enrolled in the schools self-driving program to earn a nanodegree in the field.AV training lives at the intersection of math, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering, Silver said. Plus, they need to know computer-vision, robotics, and motion planning, and sensor-fusion, and LIDAR, and RADAR technologies to augment their understanding of this work. Thats parte of why its so hard to find people for this, Silver says. Its because its so hard to find people with a background in all those areas. Most Udacity students have engineerin g degrees and many already work as engineers. But they seek to augment their training and job skills with the six-month AV training program, which offers skills training to help students become job ready. While Udacitys program isnot formally accredited, the program aims to equip students with the specific skills that match those of the company that the students want to work for.The first 2,000 AV engineering students will graduate from the Udacity program at the end of 2018. About 100 of them already have job offers, Silver said. Employers werent even waiting until theyd graduated to recruit them, he added.Over time we want to supply industry withas many engineers as needed, Silver says. We can scale to as many students around the world as want to take it. They dont need to come to Mountain View. They have deadlines for their projects and coding exercises and they earn a nanodegree certificate.Udacity might be onto something.Any society looking to expand the use of AVs needs more t eachers in civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, says Max Donath, director of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Institute at the University of Minnesota. While many U.S. universities and colleges have autonomous vehicle research, projects, and related classes, very few of them have a defined AV undergraduate degree. The University of Virginia, for example, offers the course Autonomous Racing Principles of Perception, Planning, and Control taught by Madhur Behl, an assistant professor of computer science and systems and information engineering. Students in the course work in teams to build, drive, and race scaled-down AVs. During the process, they learn to use robot operating systems, integrate sensors that include cameras and LIDAR on an embedded computer, and implement algorithms for location determining, mapping, path planning, and control.Right now, so many electrical and mechanical engineers dont have a clue about LIDAR, and they havent heard about differential GPS, Donath said. We need to rethink our educational environment. We need to get students excited about AV before they move out into the real world. He suggests that private companies, such as AV manufacturers, team with degree programs to ensure a steady stream of students who graduate with the tools needed for AV engineering. Polaris, the Medina, Minn.-based off-road vehicle manufacturer, for example, might choose to build an AV so students can see how it works and doesnt work, and can play around with it, Donath said.Industry will be hiring people who know these are real things and not toys, he adds. Theyll have to have employees who appreciate controlled system failures and who understand how LIDAR and GPS works, and the limits of communication within those systems.Geographic areas with university degree AV programs may also experience robust growth in AV industries and the money those will bring to their communities, as students may stay in the after graduation and start-ups and rel ated businesses, he said.Creating a dedicated AV curriculum in higher education might take a bit more time, but the student interest is there, industries are hungry for graduates with AV expertise, and the salaries are really quite engaging, Donarth said.Jean Thilmany is a freelance writer in St. Paul who frequently writes on engineering topics.Read More Computing Power and Sensors Strengthen Rural Electric Grids No BS Engineering Elephant Dung to Help African Farmers Spray-On Antenna Could Signal the Future of Wireless For Further Discussion AV training lives at the intersection of math, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. How to Ask to Work on Another Teams Project - The Muse

How to Ask to Work on Another Teams Project - The MuseHow to Ask to Work on Another Teams ProjectYou dont hate your job necessarily, but youre, wellbored. Your day-to-day responsibilities have become second nature, and you no longer feel like youre being challenged. Then an idea smacks you in the face. Someone on the sales kollektiv is working on a new assignment youd love to get your hands on. Or, youve been dying to start a company blog and no ones taken the initiative. Or, youre fascinated by social media and want to spend more time helping out the marketing team.Surely your anfhrer would let you take on an outside project if it was for the good of the company? Heres what you need to know to get them to say yes.Make a Convincing CaseFirst of all, do your homework. How would this help you in your job and help your team, and help your manager get work done? says Muse career coach Valerie McMurray, who has 20+ years of experience in corporate leadership and human resources. Make the c onnection for your boss not just to how this project aligns with team or company goals, but how itll make you a more valuable employee. What skills will you develop? What relationships will you build? What discoveries could you make? Then, she says, write all this out in a plan This is what it would look like, this is the time it would take me, this is how it wont impact my job. (Need an easy presentation template to organize your thoughts? Try this one.)Finally, she adds, Can you get anybody else to advocate for you? Maybe the team member youre looking to work with or another supervisor within your team can back up your claims and help you get permission from your boss. Grab coffee or sit down with them to understand how you can be a valuable asset or how you can participate in their work, and ask if theyd be willing to vouch for you.Approach Your BossYou always want to emphasize and lead with how its going to benefit the boss- how itll make things better for him or her, how itll ma ke him or her look better, says McMurray. This makes sense, right? If you can show itll be good for them (and not just good for yourself), youre more likely to get their stamp of approval. So how do you approach this conversation? Well, you can send an email to start. For exampleHi Boss Name,Id like to discuss taking on a department name project. As of now, Im currently working on projects youre working on. These are on track to be completed by when theyll be finished with the hope of expected result, and are a top priority for me.However, I have a bit of room in my schedule to work on other assignments, and Id love to explore the possibility of taking on new project. I believe this would be beneficial for both of us because reasons why it would benefit you, your manager, and your team.Would it be possible to sit down to chat more about this? Happy to send you my initial thoughts/plan, as well as get your feedback on this idea.Your Name Assuming you get a yes, finalize your presentatio n and prepare to walk your boss through your thought process (and if you get a no, jump straight to the next step)Ive noticed that gap in process or goal and think that this project will helpAs you can see, this would directly contribute to our goals byMy hope is that through this project Ill develop X skills/improve Y processId love to expand my skill set and become a stronger player, and believe this is the best option to do so becauseMore importantly, prepare for and address any concerns they may have. What are the counterarguments to getting this project up? How will you defend yourself when they say theyre worried about it taking up too much of your time? Or, conflicting with your other responsibilities? Or, requiring them to manage you more?Understand That You Might Get a No (for Now)The reality of all this is that theres no guarantee your manager will say yes- even if you did all your homework, even if you made a solid case, even if other people back you up. Your boss has the final say on what you work on, and its possible this project would conflict with their expectations for the future. Maybe they expect a massive project to be handed over to your team in the next couple months and so they need you to be ready and available. Or, theyre aware that company goals might be shifting and this project will no longer be feasible or in-line with the changes.Regardless, be prepared to react in the right way, says McMurray. How you respond to a no says wonders about who you are as an employee, and staying positive and professional may convince your boss to reconsider your request down the road. Here are some phrases to tryI understand why you disagree with this and appreciate you explaining further.I wasnt aware of those changes and am glad you brought them to my attention.Thank you for considering my idea, and Im happy continuing to do what were doing now.Its also possible your boss will blatantly say that theyd be willing to revisit it later on. If thats the case, says McMurray, hold them to it. You can say something along the lines of Great, I understand. Is it OK if in six months I reach out to you to discuss this again? and ask to set a meeting on the calendar.Make the fruchtwein of Your Current SituationIf all doors are shut, says McMurray, are there things you could come up with within your own teamthat gives you a stretch assignment of some kind to help in your development?Basically, are there other options for challenging yourself and learning within the bounds of your current job?Maybe you cant start a blog, but you can assist your team in writing copy for your company newsletter. Or, instead of being able to help out your colleague on the sales team you grab coffee to learn more about the work theyre doing. Or, maybe you take your passions outside your office- signing up for an online class or taking on a side gig.Just because you cant work on something under your boss eye doesnt mean your growth has to stagnate. One more note I ts key to have unterstellung career development conversations with your boss early on- usually when youre just starting out at a new job. This way, when you approach them with a proposal like this, they already expected it and understand how it aligns with your career goals. And managers arent always good at this, so its up to the employee to start that relationship and process out from the very beginning, adds McMurray. So, moving forward, make it clear to your boss where youre looking to go and how they might help you in getting there. Youll immediately set yourself up to have more opportunities for exploration in your role.

Bearing that in mind, we are collecting the stories of people who went to work anyway, usually out of economic necessity and sometimes to seek safety or try to help otzu sichs. Here are a few of their stories.Bread for everyoneA group of bakers at a Mexican bakery in Texas were stuck at work for two days amid the flooding. Workers used more than 4,000 pounds of flour to make sweet bread, called pan dulce, for those affected by the storm, the mayor and police in the area- and for free, according to Chicagos WGN-TV.Brian Alvarado, who manages the South Wayside Drive location, told The Independent about what happened. When they realised they were stuck, they decided to keep themselves busy and help the community and made as many loaves of bread as they couldBy the time the owner managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that we took the loaves to loads of emergency centres across the city for people affected by the floods he told the publication. The bakery even posted aboutwhat happened on its Facebook page.(function(d, s, id) var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)0 if (d.getElementById(id)) return js = d.createElement(s) js.id = id js.src = https//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.jsxfbml=1version=v3.1 fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs)(document, script, facebook-jssdk))This video on their pagealso shows people scooping up the bread. The reality of working for a newspaperJournalists at the Houston Chronicle risked dangerous condit ions to keep it running, and Poynter wrote about the details.Similarly, people in the newsroom of the Victoria Advocate in Texasreportedly brought their pets to work as they covered Hurricane Harvey.Wading through the flood watersA 60-year-old woman walked to her job at a hotel through waist-deep water because she couldnt afford to miss a day of work - a reality for many workers.A deadly commuteEspecially for those with core social functions, showing up to work during a hurricane seems like a necessity. His body was located Tuesday.Police Chief Art Acevedo reportedly said Perez spent about 2 hours driving around trying to get to his duty station. The sergeant started his commute to work at around 4 a.m. on Sunday when it was still dark out. His car was stuck in high water and he didnt surv ive the trip.Daunting conditionsIts understandable that hospital workers would be called in to work during the storm, as the numbered of injured and those requiring medical attention grew. How do you make an acting resume?Acting resumes are a little different than resumes for other occupations. At the top you put your anthroponym, hair color, eye color, height and weight, email address and phone number. Next is the experience section, which is rundown of your acting credits. Sort them into sub-headers of film, TV, theater, and commercial. If you have voiceover work you may include that, too. Then list your education, including degrees earned and workshops taken from important industry professionals. Be sure to name names. Casting directors want to know with whom youve studied. The last section is special skills. This is where you mention horseback riding, juggling, foreign languages, etc. Check our acting resume sample for great ideas.2. Whats the best length for an acting resume? Most acting resumes should only be one page long, as is our acting resume sample. If you have a lot of credits, choose the most important ones to include. Only more senior actors, with 20 years experience or more, should have a resume longer than one page. Even in that case, keep your resume current. Casting directors are more interested in what you have done recently, not what you did two decades ago.3. What should you include about your accomplishments on your acting resume? If you have won any awards or honors, create a section to showcase them and place it below your credits. Write the title of the award, the organization that gives the award, and the year you received it. If the award is very prestigious, such as the BAFTA or the Critics Choice Awards, its okay to mention a nomination even if you didnt win. There are other accomplishments you can include as well, such as creating a role in a Broadway debt or acting in an award-winning play. Make a note of these in your credit listing. See our acting resum e sample for further examples.4. What is the best design for an acting resume? An acting resume can have a little color and some design flair, but it contains a lot of information and must be easily read. One of the most important features of an acting resume is the three-column format for your credits. This is the industry standard, as illustrated on our acting resume sample. In the first column you list the project, in the second column the character, in the third column the theater or production company. This is the design casting directors expect to see, so it is unwise to deviate from it too widely.5. How can you separate your acting resume from other candidates resumes? To make your acting resume stand out from the crowd, keep it current and on-point. Theater and film trends change from season to season, and if you have had recent classes, workshops, or experience that takes advantage of those trends, make sure theyre in your resume. Also, dont overload your document with unimpo rtant projects. Choose your best work to keep your document uncluttered and easy to read.Need more help? An alarming number of people are texting in their sleep

An alarming number of people are texting in their sleepAn alarming number of people are texting in their sleepAmericans are so latched to our smartphones that it feels as though we check them almost instinctively every few minutes. So its elend all that surprising that our obsession has slipped into our subconscious and glued us to our phones, even when were sleeping. It is a little terrifying, however, that young people have learned to sleep text - and are doing so at alarming rates. A quarter of college students surveyed in a recent study answered they had texted in their sleep before, and 72% did not even remember doing it when they awoke. The report, published by the Journal ofAmerican College Health, studied how growing phone use affects young peoples sleep. Spoiler alert The results arent good. Not enough hoursA lot of Americans dont get the sleep they should to stay healthy. College students are especially bad about not prioritizing their rest, and many get as little as 6 to 6.9 hours of sleep on average. So already, young people are exhausted and sleep-deprived. Then, you add on the distraction of a cell. According to the study, students who did text in their sleep were mora likely to keep their phone as a bedmate and had lower sleep quality ratings.A majority of people said they started sleep texting during college, and women were more inclined to the practice than men. Most people come to the rude awakening that theyve sleep texted when they read through their phone messages in the morning, but 5% reported having what must have been an awkward conversation with a friend who brought the incoherent texts to their attention.Quality of sleep chart College students sleeping with technologyWhat are they saying? It may sound like a major faux pas to text in your sleep - akin to those drunken messages sent to an ex at 3 a.m. But thankfully, it seems that most sleep texts are relatively incoherent and random.A few examplesLips I dripped it.I legittt wish veggird w ere enough to fuelme. It means Girls tonight. It I 10.These texts are embarrassing at worst - like a butt dial or text, they show a lack of awareness, but are not in any way life-shattering.And chances are theyre falling on sympathetic eyes. Not only are young people mainly sleep texting friends or significant others, but theyre also more likely to know others who sleep text like them. So at least theres camaraderie in this bogus 21st-century trend.
